Billy Smith #167
Billy Smith, a goaltender known for his fierce competitiveness, spent the majority of his career with the New York Islanders, playing an integral role in their four consecutive Stanley Cup victories from 1980 to 1983. Smith's unorthodox style, combined with his ability to excel under pressure, earned him the reputation as a clutch performer. He was recognized for his exceptional playoff performances, winning the Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoff MVP in 1983. During Game 1 of the 1983 Stanley Cup Final, many believe that Smith had one of the best goaltending performances in Stanley Cup Final history. Streaking down the right side, Edmonton’s Jari Kurri passes the puck over to Wayne Gretzky who redirects it towards the net. Smith reads the play and makes a great diving save to preserve the Islanders’ lead in the game en route to a 2-0 shutout. The previous time the Oilers were shut out was more than two years earlier, on March 12, 1981, by the same Billy Smith.
