He became the 9th player in history to reach the milestone of 69 goals in a single season, marking the first time an American-born player achieved this feat. The last time 69 goals were scored in a season was back in 1995-96 by Mario Lemieux and it also matched the single season high of renowned goal scorer Mike Bossy. Matthews outpaced the second-highest goal scorer by an impressive margin of 12 goals, the largest difference since the 2007-08 season. His 69th goal was a testament to his skill, scored during a Toronto power play where he displayed his incredible shot release, rifling a wrist shot into the back of the net.
