With four minutes remaining in the third period of a tie game, captain Steve Yzerman goes end-to-end to score a massive unassisted goal for the game-winner in Game 2 in Denver vs. rival and reigning Stanley Cup champion Colorado. The captain picks up the puck below the goal line and evades a forechecker before speeding up the ice. Entering the offensive zone with speed, he goes down the left wall on his backhand and then quickly shifts it to his forehand to get the shot off. The rebound kicks out behind the net where Yzerman banks it off Patrick Roy’s pad. Earning the split in the series on the road helped Detroit gain momentum and confidence in finally beating their nemesis, earning a trip to the Stanley Cup Final where they swept Philadelphia to end the franchise’s 42-year Cup drought.
