The 1970’s saw the somewhat nomadic Australian Open moved from White City Stadium in Sydney, to Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club in Melbourne. The tournament was played on grass throughout this decade at a range of times between December and March. The men’s side of the draw was dominated by Ken Rosewell, John Newcombe and Guillermo Vilas - all winning twice through the decade.   The women’s side of the draw was won by Australians 8 out of the 10 years, with Evonne Goolagong Cawley taking the hat-trick in 1974, 75 and 76. Evonne won her fourth title in 1977.

The 1980’s ushered in a new breed of competitor with more and more internationals joining the ranks. Names like Wilander, Edberg and Lendl lit up the men's side of the draw while Navratilova, Evert and Graf cemented their place as some of the greats of the women's game, all securing a minimum of 2 titles in the decade. Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club played host to the event up until 1988 when it was moved to Flinders Park in Melbourne. The inaugural Flinders Park tournament was played in front of a record 244,859 fans - up from the 140,000 that attended Kooyong in 1987.

1980s Legend: Martina Navratilova

Following the move to Flinders Park, the Australian Open had now entered a new phase of growth. Heralded as one of the best tennis-viewing stadiums in the world, Rod Laver Arena became the new home of the Australian Open. It’s fresh Rebound Ace surface challenged a new breed of players who could build a more aggressive brand of tennis. The ongoing development of lighter, yet stronger carbon rackets also helped to accelerate the competition and speed of the game. The 1990’s brought with it a new identity for the Australian Open as Tennis Australia unveiled the infamous ‘serving man’ in 1995. This logo was instantly loved by fans around the world, with its iconic silhouette in front of a warm sunset evoking the searing heat of an Aussie summer. Americans Jim Courier, Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi dominated the men’s draw throughout this decade, while Martina Hingis of Switzerland and Monica Sales of Yugoslavia both ended the decade with three and four AO titles respectively.

A new millennium brought about arguably one of the biggest changes the Australian Open had seen in years. In 2008, the Open went ‘True Blue’ and replaced the green Rebound Ace courts with the now iconic blue Plexicushion. In consultation with greats of the game, namely Lleyton Hewitt, Roger Federer and Maria Sharapova, the change was made and the consistency of pace and bounce improved with commendations from the tennis world coming in hard and fast. The 2000’s proved fruitful for a range of players with names like Agassi, Johansson, Federer, Safin, Nadal and Djokovic all taking home the Norman Brookes Cup. Lindsay Davenport kicked off the new decade with a Grand Slam title win, while Jennifer Capriati secured back to back wins in 2001 and 2002. Serena Williams took home four titles for the decade, including a famous win over sister Venus Williams in 2003.

2000s Legend: Lindsay Davenport

By the 2010’s, Melbourne’s love for sport has reached fever pitch and Australian Open crowds are consistently peaking at well over 600,000 visitors year on year.  Notably, a retractable roof was installed over Margaret Court Arena, making the Open the first of the four Grand Slams to have retractable roofs available on three of their main courts. This installation was the first of the almost $1B worth of additions and upgrades to the precinct that have ensured Melbourne Park remains the home of the Australian Open until at least 2044.   On-court, Novak Djokovic is beginning to cement himself as one of the greatest of all time winning the Australian Open title in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016 and 2019.   Meanwhile, competition in the women’s draw is fierce, with 7 different winners taking out the title in the 2010’s. Notably, Serena Williams took home 3 titles, while Victoria Azarenka took home 2.

By 2020, the newly termed ‘AO’ is more of a festival than a tennis tournament. Playing host to dozens of live music acts and countless restaurants and retail stores, fans are now treated to a day of entertainment with tennis almost playing second fiddle to the abundance of activities available in the precinct. Visitors to the 2020 tournament reached record levels with more than 812,000 people flocking to Melbourne Park for the two week event. Sofia Kenin of the USA etched her name on the trophy in 2020, while Naomi Osaka took home her second AO title in 2021. On the Men’s side, a familiar name completed the trifecta from the previous decade with Novak Djokovic taking out the title in 2020 and 2021 to add to his win from 2019.
